HOW EMPLOYERS CAN LEVERAGE DATA TO ENGAGE EMPLOYEES IN TAKING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THEIR HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE

Colleen Bruce, Director, Value-Based Purchasing and Public Policy, NATIONAL BUSINESS COALITION ON HEALTH

As employers implement value-based purchasing (VBP) strategies to help achieve cost containment and quality improvement, more decision-making responsibility is being placed with employees. In order for employees to make rational decisions, they need data. If employers are going to achieve savings through VBP strategies such as tiered provider networks, employees need to effectively use provider performance data. This session will describe efforts by employers to engage employees so they appropriately use comparative provider performance information. In addition, the benefits of employer membership in multi-stakeholder regional coalitions will be discussed as an important aspect of engaging employees around provider performance measurement.
