10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TERMINATING A DEFINED BENEFIT PLAN

Darlene Finzer, CPA, QKA, CSA, Principal,, REA & ASSOCIATES, INC.

Have your minimum funding requirements become so costly that you’re actually considering terminating your plan? If so, do you know how to go about doing it? This session will cover the four main areas you need to focus on. First, you’ll learn all the rules for termination including the criteria your plan must meet before it can be terminated. From there, you’ll get a checklist of things to consider when developing a termination strategy. You’ll then need to plan how the strategy will be carried out, who’s responsible and timelines for doing so. Finally, you’ll understand what service providers you need to work with throughout the process and what their roles are. You’ll leave this session with a solid understanding of the steps involved so you can include this information in your decision making process.
